Average monthly precipitation for my home city Denver, as well as 2 cities from my blog country, New Zealand. |
Climate: The climate of New Zealand is temperate with sharp regional contrasts and moderately high precipitation totals. On the flatter north island it is subtropical due to its proximity to the equator, however the south island is very mountainous and closer to the South Pole so it can get quite cold. The climate uniformity varies quite a bit depending on where you are on the two islands. This site, http://www.niwa.co.nz/education-and-training/schools/resources/climate/overview shows how New Zealand is divided into several different regions and how each region has a different type of climate. I found other important climate related maps on that site as well. Average temperature, rainfall, and sun light also play into the differnt climate regions.
Seasonality: My two cities in New Zealand both had a smaller seasonality in temperature compared to Denver. However when it came to annual precipitation Auckland, which is on the North Island, had a larger seasonality than Denver, and Christchurch, on the South Island, had a even smaller seasonality than Denver (Auckland > Denver > Christchurch).
Thank you for this page Matt! I always find it interesting to see the difference in seasons for countries in the southern hemisphere as your temperature graph shows. I also liked the link you provided; it has a lot of great information.
ReplyDeleteToday is the winter solstice in New Zealand, it's the day with the least hours of daylight. Here's a link to a facebook site with some awesome pictures from New Zealand and the Aurora Australis. Enjoy!
